Two ways to read the same Italian menu. Sliced beef is accurate. It's not enough.

Two things arrive at your table every night in Italy that you can’t read: the menu and the wine list.

A translation app handles both the same way. It swaps the Italian words for English ones and stops there: accurate, and almost useless for the decision you actually have to make.

The menu

Run “Tagliata di Manzo” through a translator and you get “sliced beef.” True. Not enough to decide whether to order it. Ask instead, and you get the cut, how it’s cooked, whether it’s a regional specialty, how rich it’ll taste, and whether it’s worth the price printed next to it.

The delicatessen board was the sharper version. Translated: “Parma ham, 30 months, 40 months.” Asked: why the extra ten months matters, which board is the better value for two people, and which one to skip.

The wine list was the same problem wearing different clothes

Neither of us knows much about Italian wine. We used to pick something recognizable, or ask the waiter and nod along. Three weeks of asking one question instead, “which bottle should we order?”, came back with body, region, value, and pairing. More than once it pushed us toward the cheaper bottle on the list, because that was genuinely the better pour that night.

Some bottles came with their own printed card of medals and scores, which is exactly the kind of thing that’s easy to either blindly trust or completely ignore. Asking got us what the scores actually meant, and whether they were worth taking seriously.

None of it required knowing anything about food or wine before we sat down. The words on the page never changed. What we understood about them did.

The full edition has both real menus, the wine list, the award card, and a side-by-side of every item translated versus explained.
