Most factories have digital CAD files for less than one percent of the parts actually in use on their floors. That is not a software problem. It is an economics problem.

Reverse engineering a part from a 3D scan - turning a physical object back into an editable digital file - typically costs around $1,500 and takes three to five hours of a skilled CAD technician's time. At that price, you document the parts where the cost of not having them exceeds $1,500. Everything else stays undocumented.

Last week, Backflip AI launched a CAD Copilot add-in for Autodesk Fusion that converts 3D scan data into fully parametric, editable CAD models in minutes. The effective per-part cost is around $10.

What "parametric" actually means here

The key word in that description is not "minutes." It is "parametric."

When you scan a part with a 3D scanner, you get a mesh - a surface made of triangles that accurately represents the shape, but is useless to a CAD system that expects features: extrusions, fillets, booleans, and holes you can resize. Turning a mesh into a parametric model has historically meant a CAD technician rebuilding the part from scratch, feature by feature, using the mesh as a reference.

Backflip's model was trained on millions of CAD designs. You feed it an STL file, it outputs a parametric solid - complete with a feature tree you can edit. Output is a STEP file compatible with any mechanical CAD software. Autodesk Fusion is the launch platform; Onshape integrations are coming.

A mesh-to-solid conversion that returns a locked, featureless solid is faster but largely useless for engineering work. You still cannot change it. What Backflip returns is a model with history - one you can adjust, modify, and send directly to CNC or 3D printing.

The economics

Backflip AI was founded in December 2022 by Greg Mark and David Benhaim, the same team that co-founded Markforged, the industrial 3D printing company that went public in 2021. They raised a $30 million Series A in December 2024, led by Andreessen Horowitz and New Enterprise Associates, and spent two years building the model.

The subscription starts at $20 per month. Backflip estimates per-part cost at roughly $10, depending on volume. The contrast with $1,500 is real.

What this actually changes is not just cost - it is who can afford to document parts and how many. At $1,500 per part, reverse engineering is a deliberate exception. At $10 per part, it becomes something a maintenance team can run continuously as a background process.

Who this actually matters to

If you work with physical equipment - discrete manufacturing, job shops, MRO, facilities maintenance, used machinery - and you have parts on your floor that exist only as physical objects, this is the problem Backflip is targeting.

The bottleneck was never the scanning. 3D scanners have been fast and affordable for years. It was the conversion step. That is now the cheap part.

Two things to know before you get excited. First, AI-generated CAD should be reviewed by an engineer before it goes to production. The model predicts what the part probably is. For routine symmetric geometry, that prediction is very likely correct. For anything safety-critical, verify it. Second, the company does not publish accuracy figures by geometry type. Complex organic surfaces or unusual constructions may not convert as cleanly as simple machined parts.
