Most people think of AI as a better Google. After three weeks traveling through Italy with it running in my pocket, I think that's aiming too low.
Google answers questions. This time, AI helped us travel — not because it knew more facts, but because it understood the context behind every decision, then carried that context into the next one.
Over three weeks I asked it well over 500 questions. Some were throwaway ("How many Fahrenheit is 38°C?"). Others weren't things a search engine could touch at all: "We're tired, it's 96°F, we don't want to walk much, we're staying in Parma, we love great food — what's the best day trip?" The answer wasn't a list of links. It was an itinerary.
A menu became a conversation. Instead of "Tagliata di Manzo = sliced beef," I got what cut it was, how it's cooked, whether it's a regional specialty, and whether it was actually worth ordering. By week two it knew we kept gravitating toward grilled veal chops and regional pasta — and that my wife Robin doesn't eat seafood or lamb. That's not translation. That's a recommendation from someone who's been traveling with you.
Wine lists finally made sense. Instead of parsing grape names, I just asked which bottle to order — body, pairing, value, sometimes a nudge toward the cheaper bottle because it was actually the better one.

It planned entire days. One morning, with a few free hours, I asked one question: "Build the best day." It weighed transportation, heat, walking distance, and everything we'd said we liked earlier in the trip, then handed back a full plan — the way a travel advisor would, not a search engine.
It explained everything around us. A wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano stopped being just cheese — why it's made with calf rennet, why inspectors tap every wheel listening for flaws, why a single wheel can retail for around $1,000. Traditional balsamic vinegar got the same treatment. Every museum stop got more interesting once every object had a story.
It solved actual problems — hotel Wi-Fi, a broken eSIM install, parking signage, a confusing bill, an email written in Italian. None of that is translation. That's a travel companion.
And the longer the trip ran, the better it got. Google starts over every search. This didn't. By week three it remembered the wines we'd loved, the restaurants that worked, how much walking we actually wanted — so every new answer built on the last one instead of starting from zero.
Twenty-five questions answered the same way, no five different apps: what to order, which wine, is this worth it, which train, is there parking, what am I looking at, why is this famous, convert this, explain this sign, find a pharmacy, plan tomorrow. They all started the same sentence.
On the site: the complete list, a side-by-side of what Google gives you versus what an AI companion gives you, and the exact copy-paste prompt to set this up for your own trip before you leave.
