Claude Duet messages you first, but still asks before it pays, sends, signs or deletes

Almost every AI tool you've used waits for you to type first. Claude Duet doesn't. Anthropic's new agent app keeps an eye on your email, calendar and business apps, and messages you when something needs you. The catch is a good one: before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it has to show you exactly what it's about to do and wait for your OK.

Anthropic announced Duet on October 21 as a research preview. It's waitlist-only, US-only, and comes at no extra cost on the paid Claude plans that qualify.

What it does

Each morning, Duet sends a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps. Then it checks those accounts every few hours and stays quiet unless something needs you. It runs on its own virtual computer in the cloud, so your laptop doesn't need to stay on, and you talk to it by typing or voice in one ongoing thread. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, one of Anthropic's most capable models.

Anthropic says it can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, and its help article lists Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign and Calendly. One catch for Outlook users: a Microsoft 365 logo appears on the product page, but the help article says "Microsoft 365 isn't available yet."

Early testers in Anthropic's announcement include a real estate broker whose calendar had a showing on the wrong day, which Duet flagged unprompted, and Amin Ebrahimi, owner of Shahs of Kabob, who uses it to work through invoices store by store. "I don't need to open up 100 tabs," he said.

7 Stocks You May Never Need to Sell

Buying a stock is easy. Finding one you may never need to sell is harder.

This free report reveals seven blue-chip companies selected for financial strength, durable demand and long-term potential to hold up when markets turn ugly.

The approval rule

Reading, drafting and preparing: Duet does those on its own. Sending, paying, signing and deleting: it asks first. Some things are off-limits even if you say yes. It won't trade securities, move money between accounts or get into someone else's account.

When it shops, it pays through Stripe's Link or Shop Pay. With Link, you approve the spend and it uses a one-time card that only works for that purchase. It doesn't make phone calls or text other people, and Anthropic says it never directly sees your passwords.

The honest downsides

  • It can get things wrong. Anthropic says it "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent."

  • It isn't an alarm. It checks at set intervals, so something urgent can reach you late.

  • It costs you usage. Its background checks count toward your plan's usage limits.

  • Emails can try to trick it. It reads messages written by other people, and Anthropic says no defense against hidden instructions is perfect.

  • You can't watch it work. It can't yet show you its browser.

How to get in

Join the waitlist on the Claude Duet page. Anthropic's pages list US subscribers on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans; Team and Enterprise aren't supported yet. Invitations go out in waves. Use the same email as your Claude account, and if you get in, you get one full usage-limit reset to use by November 30, 2026.

It lands in a crowded field: CBS News and TechCrunch both name Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots as rivals.

Bottom line. Duet flips the usual Claude setup: it comes to you instead of waiting to be asked, and you still press the button on anything that sends, pays, signs or deletes. If you're a US Pro, Max or Ultra subscriber and your work lives in Google and Slack, join the waitlist. If you run on Microsoft 365, wait.

On the site: every fact sourced, plus a copy-paste prompt that interviews you about your plan and apps, then tells you whether Duet is worth the waitlist and how to set it up safely.
