A parking sign in Italy nearly cost us a fine.

It's dense, bureaucratic Italian, the kind of notice where every word translates fine and the meaning still doesn't come through. Word for word it says something close to: "Temporary suspension of payment. From July 11 to August 30." Accurate, and close to useless, because it doesn't tell you what to do.

I asked AI to explain it instead of translate it, and the answer changed shape. Paid parking in the two lots the notice listed was suspended for those dates, so we could park free right there. And the suspension covered only the spaces this notice applied to, not every space in town. Park two streets over on the same assumption, and that's the fine.

In Edition 344 we wrote about why a translated menu still doesn't tell you what to order. Menus are the easy case. The ones that cost money are everything else you can't read.

The sign that costs tourists the most. Many Italian town centers are ZTLs, limited traffic zones. Drive past the sign at the wrong time without a permit and a camera records your plate. Under Italy's road code the fine runs from €83 to €332. It's a classic fine for rental-car drivers to bring home, and the notice can arrive months later, sometimes with an admin fee from the rental company on top. Translate a ZTL sign and you get "limited traffic zone." Ask AI to explain it and you find out whether you can drive in right now.

The method that works on anything. Take a photo and ask, "What does this mean for me, right now?" instead of "Translate this." Add the context it needs: the time, whether you're driving or walking, and where you're trying to go. It works on a hotel notice taped to a door, a train station sign, a confusing bill and the small print on a receipt.

One caution. AI can misread a blurry photo or an unusual local rule. For anything that costs money, like parking, driving zones or fines, use its answer to learn what to check, then confirm it on the official sign or with your hotel.

That's the pattern worth bringing home. On the surface it's a translation problem. Underneath, it's a "what does this mean for me" problem. A translation app solves the first. AI solves the second.

On the site: the actual sign, and the translation and the explanation side by side.
