Your AI agent just got a way to pay for things — and it's using a piece of the internet that's been sitting unused for 29 years.

On July 14, 2026, the Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation, a new open-governance body that now formally steers x402: a protocol that lets software pay software directly over a normal web request, no account or card required. Forty organizations have joined as members. We checked the Foundation's own list rather than trusting the headline number, and confirmed by name that Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, Amazon Web Services, Shopify, and Cloudflare are all genuine Premier members — the top membership tier, not just companies quoted nearby. Ripple, Circle, Stellar, Adyen, American Express, Fiserv, MoonPay, and the Solana Foundation hold Premier status too.

Here's the hook worth remembering: x402 runs on HTTP status code 402, "Payment Required." That code has sat in the official web specification since January 1997, described in every version since (including the current one) with exactly one sentence: "reserved for future use." Nobody built that future for 29 years — card-network fees made charging a fraction of a cent pointless, so the web monetized through ads and subscriptions instead, and 402 just sat there. Coinbase finally built the future it was reserved for, publishing the x402 protocol in May 2025. Now, when a server wants payment for something, it returns an actual 402 with a price attached — instead of a paywall page or a failed request.

The exchange itself is simple, four steps: the agent asks for a resource; the server answers with a price instead of the content; the agent attaches a small stablecoin payment and asks again; the server hands the resource over. The whole thing settles in seconds, with no signup flow in the middle.

Now the number that needs a caveat, because coverage of this launch has thrown it around loosely: "75 million transactions." That's real — CoinDesk traced it to x402's own public dashboard — but it's a rolling 30-day count as of mid-July 2026, not a lifetime total. It works out to about $24 million moved between roughly 94,000 buyers and 22,000 sellers, or an average payment near 32 cents. That's the design point, not a bug: this is built for a flood of sub-dollar machine payments no card network could process profitably, not a few large ones. Useful context: Visa alone moves roughly $40 billion a day, so treat "75 million transactions" as "a lot of tiny activity," not "a lot of money."

One more thing worth being precise about: July 14 wasn't the payment rail's first day. The x402 protocol itself has been live since May 2025, and its own site describes it as production-ready, already handling millions of transactions. What actually launched this week is the neutral governance layer — Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and the rest agreeing to jointly steward the standard's future under a nonprofit, rather than leaving it as one company's protocol to change unilaterally. That distinction is the whole story: a payment method any single vendor controls is a risk every business using it inherits; one forty companies jointly govern is a lot closer to how the card networks themselves earned decades of trust.

Why this is worth a few minutes of your attention even if you'll never touch crypto: this is the plumbing question sitting underneath every "AI agent that books things for you" pitch you've seen this year. Something has to decide how an agent is allowed to pay, and who's allowed to say no when it shouldn't. Until now, nobody outside payments teams had a real, standardized answer. Now there's an open, vendor-neutral one, with the biggest names in payments actually signed on to steward it rather than just watching from the sidelines.
